In ancient Norse mythology, Valkyries are supernatural women who reside in Valhöll (Valhalla) among the most honored warriors. Literally translated to mean “choosers of the slain,” they were fierce female spirits who traveled between the realms, often riding out into battle themselves to bestow victory or defeat among the living. As modern scholars have also discovered, before the medieval period, mortal women among Nordic peoples took up the Valkyrie life as shield-maidens, asserting their own personal power and winning for themselves rights that women in many other cultures did not achieve until almost 1,000 years later. It is from these courageous women that we draw our inspiration and why we embrace the slogan, “Valhalla when I die!”
